It's difficult to know how to start writing when it has been such a long time since the last time you posted but I'll try to do my best.
Beginning of the 4th month here...unbelievable! We have done less things than we'd have liked to but I really have nothing to complain about, because the few places we have visited have been incredible and the experience we are having in our university is priceless.
Maybe you have seen some pictures or you have heard it directly from me (or from Clara) but, just in case, I'm going to do a quick review of the main things we have done since the last time I wrote:
1. New York

Spending thanksgiving break visiting this wonderful city, meeting some "relacioneros" and some of our friends from Loyola has been incredible. Hearing again Irene's famous sentences (we all love your "botitas" Isa); David's explanations and the incredible fact that being together with Pelayo makes both of them walk desperatly slowly; Marta, her 9o,000 pictures and the funny moments having her and Cris together, discovering that Nacho has the same gloves as me, getting to know Paloma, Diego and Lucía a little bit better, having the luck of meeting our personal guide (Mike) and get to know the hidden side of NY (I really loved those houses decorated with hundreds of colorful lights), sharing the views of a sunset at the top of the empire State Building with our dear Walter and, of course spending this wonderful time with my dear roomie-sis-personal stylist/psycologist( and a large list of adjectives)...is something I really won't forget.

2. Christmas dinner at home


We wanted to get together all those people who have made our stay here easier, funnier and to say it shortly unforgettable. We are lucky 'cause we are staying here the whole year but we really wanted to say "see you soon" (I actually don't like to say "goodbye") to those who have shared this four months with us. There are only a few weeks left and we really need to get the best out of them. Just in case I don't get to write again before we leave just tell you: thank you for those moments, I'm glad I've meet all of you, have a safe trip back home and I hope I'll get to see you again at any point in our lives.

Mix

I Know it's been ages since the last time I updated the blog but I swear I have not forgotten to write, it was just that I didn't have enough time to do so (I have started many posts but at the end I did not finish writing any of them).
In those last weeks we have done many things besides studying.I'll make a list with the most remarkable ones so that it will be easy for you to follow.

1. Visit to Harpers Ferry, one of the most beautiful national parks in West virginia.Hiking & amazing views as you can see in the pictures.
















2. Halloween party & costume designs (twister & eskimal)

3. Get lost in downtown Baltimore & discover:
a) A wonderful italian restaurant, with an amazing white pizza(totally italian, only the fat man with a with sleeveless t-shirt was missing)
b)Road full of nice shops (have you ever heard about "south moon under"?)
c)The intelligence of US people that wait politely in line to use the escalators when the fire alarm is ringing in a mall full of people, instead of looking for the emergency exit
d) How delicious Black out cake is (in the Cheesecake Factory, of course)

4.Play squash (we have to do some exercise to burn up all we eat.
5.Midnight breakfast (of course,eso no podía faltar ;))

6.Check out Pandora radio (radio online-only for those of you staying in the States. Really cool to listen to many different types of music, you only select your preferences and it plays the music you like)

PS. I know it is a weird post. I have tried to summarize, I promise the next one will be better organized. And it will come sooner too...

filosofía ( de vida ) en pequeñas dosis ;)

Hay momentos en los que te sientes realmente bien, ¿la causa? Puedes saberla o no...pero el hecho, que es lo más importante, está ahi y es lo que cuenta. Momentos en los que tienes ganas de coger papel y lápiz para intentar expandir esa ola de positividad que te invade.(Como muchos sabemos "la buena onda se expande y la mala también", que recuerdos,eh??)

Hoy tengo un dia de esos, estoy contenta por todo y por nada a la vez. Bueno, más que contenta debería decir exultante. Estoy feliz porque ha dejado de llover y, a pesar del fresco hace un sol radiante. Estoy feliz porque no tengo más clases hoy (han cancelado la que teniamos por la tarde- lo siento Clara, a Chance ya le verás la semana que viene) y porque me lo he pasado fenomenal en la clase que tenia por la mañana (podeis llamarme friki pero es que effective writing con este hombre me encanta xD). Estoy feliz porque me siento satisfecha conmigo misma. Estoy feliz porque se me ha dado una oportunidad única y creo que le estoy sacando partido...estoy feliz por tantas cosas que tengo ganas de contagiar esa felicidad.

Porque no siempre nos damos cuenta de lo importante que es mirar las cosas desde el lado positivo y muchas veces nos quedamos anclados en la pereza,en la desesperación o en la rutina. Porque muchas veces queremos ser tan perfeccionistas que nos olvidamos de disfrutar de lo más básico y porque no podemos dejar que las cosas se queden así.

Sé que algunos de los que estais leyendo estas líneas probablemente no esteis tan emocionados como yo en el dia de hoy, pero me sentiria orgullosa si consiguese sacaros, al menos, una pequeña sonrisa.
Si por lo que sea hoy teneis un dia más tristón o estáis estresados (como debería estar yo, ahora que pienso en todo lo que me queda por hacer) hacer un pequeño esfuercillo y reiros. Recordad algún momento gracioso, alguna frase sin sentido que dijisteis u oisteis decir o parad dos minutos y escuchad una canción que os guste especialmente. Recargareis las pilas, reviviréis los ánimos y vereis todo más claro.
Creedme, el esfuerzo valdrá la pena.

Hoy no hay versión inglesa, me tiraba la lengua patria;p Sorry for those who won't be able to understand today's post but there are things that are not easy to be translated and there are moments when one needs to express himself in his native language. Montréal

I've been the whole week saying I was going to post about my trip to Canada but I haven't had enough time to do so until this moment that I've said to myself: "stop doing other things and write".So here I am.
For those of you who don't know it already, last weekend I went to Montreal with the french department (for only 50 bucks who will refuse to go?)It was such a wonderful experience.
After nearly eleven hours in the car (that really didn't seemed to be that much) we arrived to the city and we left our things in the room.(An enormous class with lots of beds and a wall painted in graffiti- see pic below to get an idea).

Llevo toda la semana diciendo que iba a escribir un post sobre mi viaje a Montreal pero entre unas cosas y otras lo he ido posponiendo hasta ahora que me he dicho: "para de hacer otras cosas y escribe". Así que aquí estoy...
Para todos aquellos que no lo sepais ya, el finde pasado estuve en Montreal con el departamento de Francés de la universidad.( Me costó un poco decidirme pero por solo 50 dolares no podia dejar pasar la ocasión).
Tras casi 11 horas de viaje (que no parecieron tantas) llegamos a la ciudad y dejamos las cosas en la habitación- una especie de clase gigante con un montón de camas y una pared graffiteada). Para más detalles mirad la foto de debajo.


Then they gave us a map and a city guide and we started planning where we wanted to go. The first day we only had time to hang around a little bit 'cause it was late and we were going to have dinner so we went to l'observatoire. An amazing place where from you could see the views of the whole city.

Entonces nos dieron una guia de la ciudad y un mapa y comenzamos a planear los sitios que queriamos visitar. El primer dia no tuvimos mucho tiempo y por eso fuimos al "Observatoire" que nos pillaba cerca de casa. No se si lo podreis ver en la foto pero habia unas vistas increibles de toda la ciudad.



But the real adventure begun the next day. We had only that day to visit the city and to get to find different roads (that appeared in a reading for french class) and take pictures of them. As always, I acted as a GPS making the frenchies walk as they've never done in their lives. We wanted to see soo many things and at the end we managed to do so. The city was charming. It's streets, it's neighborhoods, it's people...everything.
Pero la aventura de verdad comenzó al dia siguiente. Sólo teníamos ese dia para ver la ciudad y para tratar de encontrar las calles que salian en una historia que habiamos leido en clase de francés. (A las que habia que hacer fotos para demostrar a los que se habian quedado aqui que realmente existian).
Como habitualmente desempeñé mi función de GPS e hice andar a las francesas más de lo que habian andado en su vida...Queríamos ver muchas cosas y al contrario de lo que pensabamos pudimos ver la mayoria. La ciudad es preciosa y tiene un encanto especial...las calles, la gente, los distintos barrios...todo, en definitiva.





Definetly, I'll need to go back again. Anyone who want to come with me?

Realmente, voy a tener que volver en algún momento de mi vida. Alguien se apunta al viaje?

I see that only Trish has been brave enough to try to solve the little quizz...well, anyway I'll give you the answers so you can see if you were right when you thought about them. (Tell me which ones you were able to find out because I'm curious- the first time I only managed to solve two).

Today another theme. It's been quite a tough and rainy day. Many homework as usually and a broken computer have not made it easy to spend a great day but still there have been (as always hopefully) things that have awaken the smile that was sleeping I don't know where. It is great to have friends that are there during this moments of weakness, some of them are just nearby and others that despite of being far have the power to make you feel better.I really want to say thanks to all of you.

Yesterday, in french class I discovered a short movie that you should watch. (I'm gonna put it here so it would be easier for you to see it). It can be weird (it's in french) but it doesn't need previous knowledge of the language to understand. Tell me what do you think and if you know any film like this one let me know 'cause I loved it!



Veo que la única que se ha atrevido a comentar en el post anterior ha sido Trish... asi que a lo mejor deberia darle las respuestas sólo a ella. xD. Bueno como me consta que algunos estais intrigadillos y habeis hecho el esfuerzo de pensar os pegaré por aqui las respuestas. (Eso sí, por curiosidad simplemente me gustaria que me dijeseis cuántas habeis acertado, porque yo de todas las que habia, en un principio sólo acerté dos).

Cambiando de tema. Este ha sido un dia lluvioso y un poco duro. Hemos tenido muchos deberes (como siempre) y si a eso le añadís que sigo sin ordenador, os podeis hacer a la idea de lo cuesta arriba que se me ha hecho el día. Menos mal que siempre hay por ahí alguien capaz de sacar esa sonrisa que por mucho que busques parece que no vas a encontrar...Es genial eso de poder contar con amigos que están ahi y que viviendo al lado o incluso estando lejos tienen la magnífica capacidad de hacerte sentir mejor. No se si lo digo a menudo pero muchas gracias a todos por ello.

Ayer en clase de francés vimos un corto que me encantó (os lo he puesto aquí para que lo podais ver y me digáis qué os parece). Si conocéis alguno más de este estilo decídmelo porque me encantan.

It's time to start again

After having spent a few weeks here I can say we are immerse (almost totally) into the American culture:baseball games,life at campus, classes, food (you don't even imagine how big were the pizzas we ate the other day..), parties and all that stuff, you know...
Today I wanna talk about one of the classes I've had today that has been quite interesting: Effective writing. I know that it doesn't sound really attractive but it is pretty fun. The goal of the class is learning how to improve our writing skills which turns out to be really useful not only for writing in english but also for writing in any language. I've thought that I'll put the lessons into practice in this blog so you can tell me if you notice the improvements or not.



The other day, as a brainstorming exercice we had to watch a short movie and at the same time write the ideas that popped-up our mind in a piece of paper. The results were kind of funny because each one of us had seen different things..The film was weird but really well made. ( I've been searching for it on the internet so you can experiment but I can't find it..I'll have to ask to the teacher). The teacher is so nice and he is always telling us stories or trying to do interesting exercices.

I'll copy here some brain-teasers we had to guess the other day. Try and see how many of them you can work out. (No looking up on the internet is allowed). I'll post the right answers in the next post ;)

Baltimore here we are

Ya hemos llegado a nuestro destino. Después de unos días de organización y adaptación al que durante este año va a ser nuestro nuevo hogar he decidido ponerme manos a la obra y retomar el blog. Intentaré prestarle más atención de la que le he prestado hasta ahora...lo prometo.
Baltimore es una ciudad muy bonita, con muchas zonas verdes y con un tiempo (por ahora) muy agradable. Además, por lo que nos han dicho, ofrece una gran cantidad de actividades de distintos tipos. Por ahora sólo hemos visitado el puerto que es realmente bonito y el campus de la Universidad que, a decir verdad, es bastante más grande de lo que me esperaba.
Durante la semana de orientación nos han hablado de cómo movernos por la ciudad y por el campus, nos han explicado cómo funciona la universidad, hemos visto el gimnasio (enorme, por cierto), nos hemos sumergido en la cultura americana -partido de béisbol y comida rápida y nos han dado un póster-guía para saber cuáles son las cosas que no nos podemos perder por nada del mundo.
Aquí os lo dejo para que le echéis un vistazo. ¿Qué os parece? ¿Alguna sugerencia para saber por dónde empezar?

Esta tarde tenemos una fiesta y vamos a intentar hacer una tortilla a ver que tal nos sale asi que os dejo por el momento.

PD. Hoy voy a escribir sólo en español porque tampoco me da tiempo a más, ya escribiré algún dia sólo en inglés para compensar xD

Despegue inminente

Aprovecho que tengo un ratillo para publicar el que será mi último post desde España (por lo menos hasta dentro de unos meses). No me voy a preocupar en hacerlo en "modo bilingüe" porque este va a ser mi pequeño toque de despedida y tampoco va a ser muy largo porque no tengo demasiado tiempo.
Resumiendo muchísimo: ha sido un verano increíble en el que he aprendido a saborear cada momento intentando almacenar en mi memoria todos los recuerdos posibles para poder tirar de ellos y sacar esas sonrisas que a veces no se dónde se esconden.

Trajín / Hustle & Bustle

Estamos ya en agosto y se nota bastante.Cuesta ver a gente por las calles y se ven maletas: señales inequívocas de viaje inminente.Maletas para arriba y para abajo, unos que vuelven y otros que se van. Y en el medio los que estamos de pasada o aquellos que no tienen la suerte de estar de vacaciones.

Van pasando los dias y dejamos atrás vistas tan maravillosas como estas de Jávea, donde he estado pasando unos días de relax antes de volver a casa a cambiar las maletas y salir escopetada hacia el pueblo. Tengo que decir que aunque sólo tiene una playa de arena (la playa del arenal)merece la pena ir,el agua es cristalina y está lo suficientemente fresca como para servir de alivio contra calorazo veraniego.



Y poco a poco se va acercando el final de las vacaciones, los que nos vamos más tarde intentamos apurar los días al máximo y despedimos a aquellos que comienzan su aventura deseándoles que tengan un buen viaje y que empiecen pronto a contar sus novedades. Así que perdonadme si dejo esto un poco de lado, comprenderéis que para sacar el máximo provecho a unas cosas se debe dejar otras de lado...;)

PD.Dos sugerencias por si alguien saca un rato para ir al cine o para leer durante estos días: la peli de Origen y el libro de "El tiempo entre costuras". Ambas altamente recomendables. ¿Alguna sugerencia para leer durante estos días?


It's august and it's easy to recognise why: no one in the streets and many baggage. People carrying their bags from one place to another. Some of them arrive and others leave. In the middle those of us who are spending a few days at home or the unlucky ones that have to work.
Days go by and we have to leave beautiful places like the ones you can see in the photos of this post. I took them in Javea, a small village in the eastern coast of Spain with fantastic beaches with crystalline water cool enough to fight against the terrible heat of summer in this part of the country.




The end of hollidays will come soon and those of us who leave later try to make the most of everyday and we say goodbye to the friends that start their adventures wishing them good trip and hoping they tell us news soon. As you can guess I'm in the first group so I hope you'll understand that I won't post much this days...;)

PS. If you have time to go to the cinema I think you should see the movie Inception, it's weird but it's a good film. Any suggestions of books to read?

Shrek 4

El otro día fui al cine a ver la última peli de Shrek y la verdad es que está bastante bien. Al contrario de lo que muchos puedan pensar sobre el cansancio y sobreexplotación del personaje que puede suponer esta cuarta entrega de la película he de decir que en no estoy de acuerdo.

Shrek: Felices para siempre sigue la línea de las películas anteriores, es una historia con malo malísimo de por medio con final feliz. A ese esquema hay que añadir nuevos puntazos humorísticos, buena música versionada, nuevos personajes y situaciones de lo más imaginativas. En resumen, una película que si no habéis visto todavía y os apetece pasar un buen rato os aconsejo.





The other day I went to the cinema to see Shrek: The final chapter and I really liked it. In contrast with those who believed it would be tiring film only made to earn profits, I must say that it is a great film.

The movie goes on with the story (and style) of the other films: it is a story with a villain which has a happy ending. It has funny moments and jokes, good music and it adds few surprises (new charcters and situations reflecting the amazing imagination of the film-makers). To sum up, a great combination I suggest you to see if you haven't do it yet.

Julio/ July

Diseños Alma Aguilar Spring- Summer 2010

Una de las mejores cosas que tiene el mes de julio son las rebajas. En ellas podemos conseguir básicos para nuestro armario o los últimos artículos de moda por un precio bastante más bajo de lo que estaban en un principio.Arriesgándonos,eso sí, a que cuando lleguemos no queden tallas pero consiguiendo ahorrar bastante en general.

Lo que todavía no termino de entender es por qué inflan tanto los precios.Porque si en rebajas vemos descuentos de hasta un 70 % y todavía siguen sacando beneficios (porque obviamente no van a rebajar para perder dinero) es para plantearse seriamente comprar durante el resto del año...Aunque claro llegas a las tiendas cuando están de rebajas y no se por qué razón siempre se te va el ojo a las "nuevas colecciones" y ya estás perdida. Qué coincidencia que sean más bonitas y te gustan más.

Se nota un poco que he estado de rebajas esta mañana, ¿verdad? Qué le vamos a hacer, el mundo de la moda funciona así...el único remedio que le veo es comprar con cabeza y ser capaces de dejar cosas para las rebajas.

PD. He encontrado un libro de moda en la biblioteca que tiene muuy buena pinta. Ya os hablaré de él otro día porque tiene apartados bastante curiosos.


One of the best things of July is sales. It is when you can buy either basics or fashion clothes pretty much cheaper than they were at the beggining of the season. It is true that you may not have the size you want but it is always a good chance to save some money. Above all when you can spend it in other things.
What I still don't understand is why do they put such high prices when the real value is far too less. If they manage to offer 70% discounts (still having benefits)we should think seriously when buying during the rest of the year...
But then you arrive to the shops when there are sales and the first thing you see is the new colecction that is prettier and so you like it best.

You guess I've been shopping this morning, don't you? I think we can't do anything against this fact 'cause this is how the fashion world works so the only thing we can do is thinking carefully when shopping

PS. I've found a book about fashion in the library that really sounds great. I'll talk about it another day because it has very interesting sections

Bienvenidos/ Welcome

Bueno creo que después de un año metida en el mundo bloggero y aprovechando que puedo poner la excusa del viaje del año que viene a tierras estadounidenses ya va siendo hora de crear y compartir con vosotros mi propio blog.

Mi idea es que sea algo más que un cuaderno de bitácora de la visita a Baltimore. Quiero hablar un poco de todo: de los nuevos descubrimientos que vaya haciendo(musicales, "libreros", fashionistas…) , de mis reflexiones filosóficas (de las que los que me conocéis más sabéis que soy bastante asidua), de los viajes que vaya haciendo(que espero que sean bastantes de aquí en adelante)…y de muchas otras cosas que se me vayan ocurriendo poco a poco.

Como todos aquellos que me han precedido en la creación de estos blogs también espero que sirva para mantener el contacto con todos aquellos que estaréis un poco más lejos: mis hermosuras, mi gente de toda la vida, familia, amigos de la uni, “irlandesas” "pueblerianos" y todo aquel a quien le interesen los temas que iré tratando...(aunque haya algunos que a lo mejor no me conozcáis personalmente)

Intentaré mantener el "bilingüismo español-inglés" en las diversas entradas para que cada uno decidáis en qué lengua os apetece leerlo y para que aquellos que tengan dificultades con alguno de los dos idiomas no tengáis problemas en seguir mis aventurillas ;) Y por ahora creo que no me queda nada más por decir...espero que os guste el blog! Bienvenidos todos a THE TRAVELLING SHOES & oTHER STORIES.

After spending a year discovering the world of blogs I have decided that the time of creating one of my own has arrived. The trip to Baltimore next year has encouraged me to finally start this page.

My idea is to use this blog not only as a day-a-day diary but also as a box with a mixture of items talking about my experiences, trips, thoughts, new discoveries and a few other things that would come to mind.

As those friends who began writing their blogs before mine, I also hope this would help me to keep in touch with those of you who are far away: my best friends, my whole life friends, family, friends from university and so on and so forth. Even those of you who don’t know me personally but are interested in what I write.

I’ll try to maintain the English-Spanish model when writing so that it will be possible for you to decide the language you’d rather use and also for those of you that may have any difficulties with any of both languages so it would be easier for you to follow my adventures ;)

I think there is nothing left to say in this first entry. I hope you like my blog. Welcome everybody to THE TRAVELLING SHOES & oTHER STORIES.
